Colour me displeased...
I came within a thin milimeter of quitting my job yesterday.
After weeks of planning, buying my tickets, making arrangements for people to meet me in other cities, my management spiked my vacation plans. Through piss-poor planning, they have found themselves short-handed and under the gun.
So I will not be coming home for vacation in a few days. I don't know when it'll be. Not soon.
Pissed off barely begins to describe it.

Is that last thing spam?
That really, really sucks. I would be furious too.
Oddly, I would be tempted to leave irregardless of my employer's needs. Given how shorthanded they claim to be, I'd demand compensation given all of the plans that you've made.
Then people wonder why I don't private sector employment....
I made a choice to stay here. I had to think about it pretty hard, but when it came down to it, right now, at this moment, further employment with this company outweighed a vacation right now.
I made the following point to my boss, who acknowledged it gracefully:
"I want to make a point that is in no way a threat or ultimatum, merely something to think about: This time, for me, this was not an issue big enough to quit over. Who knows what the equation would be for someone else, or me at another time?"
He has offered to cover my fees for cancelling and changing airfare and other events I had planned for whil eI was home. Unfortunately, he can't really compensate me for missing my friend's wedding, but he has offered to write to her expressing his personal and the company's regret at making me miss it.
If my boss, a subcontractor to a subcontractor had not been so gracious, I probably would have left. But the prime contractor has made a decision that no one gets vacation for now.
In the meantime I am making the best of my time here. As I always try to do.
Thanks for the empathy, it does help to vent.
